As summer heads into its final stretch, Clark County police are planning a substantial increase of almost 150 DUI patrols to run through Labor Day. The Columbian reports that the announcement was made in a news release by the Washington Traffic Safety Commission. This heightened effort will involve police departments throughout Clark County as well as the Washington State Patrol.
The announcement follows a 15-percent rise in fatal crashes between 2012 and 2017 involving drivers who were found to be under the influence of more than one substance. According to the committee, these so-called “poly-drug drivers” are the leading cause of fatal crashes involving intoxication. Along with increased patrols, the commission is planning an educational campaign in marijuana stores to raise awareness.
Undoubtedly, this increase in patrols will mean a serious increase in the number of charges for Southern Washington residents during the final month of summer.
